Yesterday we did a fun experiment with chocolate......
First we put a chocolate button into a plastic bag
Then we held the the bag between our hands and waited for 2 minutes.....
Today we looked in the freezer.....
What had happened???
The chocolate was hard again Yum, yum |
What changes chocolate from a solid to a liquid then back to a solid..........
Heating and cooling changed the chocolate.
We used our 5 senses to describe what happens to chocolate when it is heated....

Today we sorted lots of pictures...
Our question was....
Is it a solid?
Is it a liquid?
Is it a gas?
Is paper a solid,liquid or gas? |
Is it a solid, liquid or gas? |
Is juice a solid, liquid or gas? |
It is a liquid. Is ice a solid, liquid or gas?
It is a solid but when it melts
it is a liquid.
|
WE know....
· Solids stay in one place and can be held.
· Solids keep their shape. They do not flow like liquids.
· Solids always take up the same amount of space. They do not spread out like gases.
· Solids can be cut or shaped.
Liquids can flow or
be poured easily. They are not easy to hold.
Liquids change their
shape depending on the container they are in.
·
Gases
are often invisible.
·
Gases
do not keep their shape or always take up the same amount of space.
- They spread out and change their shape to fill up whatever container they are in.
·
Gases
can be squashed.

It was raining popcorn in
Rata Tahi today...............
Inquiry.....
Our Inquiry question was.....
How does popcorn pop?
We found out that each kernel of special popping corn has a small amount of water stored inside the kernel.
When the kernel is heated the water (liquid)
turns into steam (gas) and the pressure of the steam makes the kernel explode and POP!
Only popcorn kernels can pop, and the secret is WATER.

Inquiry
Our Inquiry unit is investigating
ways in which materials change.
We toasted bread and used
our five senses to think about
and compare the changes
between bread and toast.
We thought......
what do we need
to make butter?
We made butter from cream!
If you shake cream
the fat content clumps together.
It turns from liquid to solid.
Delicious!!
